3M Dichroic Glass Finishes
3M Dichroic Glass Finishes Overview
Glass doesn’t need to be clear and colorless. Dichroic glass has long given architects a way to add shifting, iridescent color to a building, but the process of manufacturing true dichroic glass makes it expensive to specify at scale. 3M Dichroic film solves that problem. These value engineered films install onto new or existing glass and reproduce the dichroic effect at a fraction of the cost of dichroic glass itself.
Key Features:
- Color Shift: Appears to change color when viewed from different angles, with different tones visible in transmission versus reflection
- Versatility: Applies to nearly any interior or exterior glass surface, including entrances, doors, ceilings, balconies, windows, staircases, and partitions
- Two Color Options: DF-PA Blaze and DF-PA Chill, each producing a distinct color palette
- Construction: Multi-layer polymeric film that is non-metallic and non-conductive
- Durability: Hard coated surface layer helps resist scratching
- Sustainability: May contribute toward LEEDv4 credits when properly specified
3M Dichroic Glass Finishes give designers and installers a way to deliver a dramatic, ever-changing glass feature without the cost or lead time of specifying true dichroic glass.
3M Dichroic Film: Choosing Between Blaze and Chill
3M offers two dichroic finishes, each shifting color differently depending on the angle of view and whether light is passing through the glass or reflecting off it.
- 3M Dichroic Blaze: Shifts through warm tones of cyan, blue, and magenta in transmission, with red to gold hues in reflection
- 3M Dichroic Chill: Shifts through cool tones of blue, magenta, and yellow in transmission, with gold to green to blue hues in reflection
Both finishes are available with a pressure sensitive adhesive for direct glass application.
What We Love About 3M Dichroic
Dichroic film gives installers a way to deliver a genuinely striking result without the fragility or cost concerns that come with sourcing dichroic glass. It works across a wide range of glass applications, which makes it easy to pitch on almost any job, from retail storefronts and museum exhibits to schools, hotels, restaurants, and other public spaces looking for a standout design feature. It is also one of the more memorable finishes to show a client in person, since the color shift is difficult to capture fully in a photo.
Why It Stands Out in the Field
- Installs on new or existing glass, interior or exterior
- Color shift is visible from both sides of the glass
- Cleanable with standard glass cleaning methods
- Replaceable if a client wants to update the look down the road
- Backed by a 3M warranty for up to seven years
For professionals looking to offer clients a high impact glass feature without a high impact price tag, 3M Dichroic delivers.
