3M Vinyl Wrap Film isn’t just for automotive use. It can be used on boats, airplanes, electronics (laptops, tablets, mobile / cell phones), and many other flat and curved non-porous surfaces that require customization.

How It’s Made

There are two primary types of vinyl films on the market: cast and calendared. A calendared film is formed by flattening a solid piece of vinyl into a rolled good. A cast film begins as a liquid that is poured into a “cast” mold and then turned into a rolled good.

A calendared film tends to be suitable only for flat surfaces as it is thicker and less conformable than a cast vinyl. Cast vinyls are thinner, more conformable, and are suitable for compound curves, rivets, and corrugated surfaces. Calendared films tend to be less expensive than cast.

3M Vinyl Wrap Film Series 2080 is a premium cast vinyl product as opposed to calendared.

Cast Vinyl Pros

  • Thin yet durable
  • Conformable
  • Suitable for curves, rivets, and corrugations in addition to flat surfaces

Calendared Vinyl Pros

  • Suitable for flat surfaces, including sign and vehicle lettering
  • More economical than cast
