How Do Polyester Films Compare to Urethane?
Polyester films offer two major advantages over urethane films: impact resistance and optical clarity.
Mil for mil, PET-based films offer better impact resistance when compared to ATPU-based films. That translates into more protection for the windshield. To offer a similar level of protection with a urethane-based film, the thickness of the material needs to be increased. For example, the protection afforded by a 4-mil thick PET film can be achieved by an 8-mil or thicker ATPU film.
A polyester film tends to offer better optical clarity than a urethane-based film of the same thickness. As ATPU-based windshield protection films tend to be thicker than their PET-based counterparts, the disparity in optical clarity is further increased.
However, a major drawback of polyester films is that they can be difficult to install as they require heat shrinking. The heat shrinking process is not the same as traditional window tint since windshield protection films tend to be much thicker. This means that the average installation time can take up to two hours. Urethane-based windshield protection films require no heat shrinking and just lay into place due to their flexibility, offering an average installation time of just 20 minutes.

*Please contact the manufacturer of your vehicle to verify that the addition of windshield protection film does not interfere with any onboard systems such as anti-collision, lane departure, auto pilot, etc.
**Please check with all local, state, and federal laws regarding the legality of the application of windshield protection film to your vehicle.
***Windshield protection film is temporary in nature and clarity will diminish over time. Remove the film as soon as visibility is compromised.
