FAQ: Can I apply 3M Ceramic Coating on top of 3M Paint Protection Film?

Absolutely! You can apply 3M Ceramic Coating on top of 3M Paint Protection Film (PPF). They are two distinct automotive solutions yet complement each other.

3M PPF is a nearly invisible urethane and stretchable film that is applied to the painted surfaces of your car to protect them from road debris and hash. Most impact from small stones and bugs are absorbed by the self-healing film, thereby preventing damage to the underlying paint. (Please note that paint protection film does not protect paint or sheet metal from impact damage.)

3M Ceramic Coating is a measurable layer of silicone that decreases the surface friction of your car’s paint, thereby making it easier to clean and maintain. (A common misconception is that a ceramic coating protects paint from rock chips and other debris. It does not. That is what paint protection is for.)

The two products go hand in hand as they help to preserve the appearance of your car.

3M Scotchgard Pro Series PPF is clear-coated, meaning the top surface of the film is just like your car’s paint. For the most part, anything you do to your car’s paint such as washing, waxing, buffing, or polishing, you can do to 3M PPF, including the application of 3M Ceramic Coating.

The application of 3M Ceramic Coating on top of 3M PPF is the same as it is on paint. Care just needs to be taken in preparing and cleaning the paint protection film prior to application.

3M Ceramic Coating will make it easier to wash, clean, and care for your paint protection film, all without sacrificing any 3M PPF warranty coverage.

Installing 3M Ceramic Coating on top of 3M Paint Protection Film is one of the best methods of preserving the condition of your car’s paint.

Please note that it is not recommended to apply 3M Ceramic Coating on just any paint protection film. Be sure to ask your 3M Automotive Dealer prior to application.
